Maria Picone is a veteran educator who serves as a NJASRO advisory board member. She first joined the advisory board in 2010 after completing the New Jersey Resource Officer Training in the spring of that year, when serving as the school liaison to the Bloomingdale Police Department. Since that time, Maria has presented or participated in various presentations or conferences that have focused on understanding harassment, intimidation and bullying, HIB legislation, and school safety. Maria has been an active member and facilitator of HIB/School Safety Teams, and has led a variety of initiatives that support the development and maintenance of a positive school climate and culture, supporting students with behavioral difficulties, and understanding how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma impact students in school.
When first joining NJASRO’s board, Maria was the school counselor and SAC in the Bloomingdale School District, where she had previously also worked as a teacher. Since that time, Ms. Picone has moved into school administration, and currently is the Director of Early Childhood Education at Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark, NJ. Prior to that, Ms. Picone served as Director of Early Learning at University Heights Charter School, Newark, from 2017-2018, Principal, from 2012-2017 and was a supervisor in the Prospect Park School District from 2011-2012.
Maria has completed an Advanced Graduate Program in Educational Administration and has Master’s Degree in Counseling, Human Services, and Guidance from Montclair State University, where she also completed her undergraduate and teacher certification programs. In addition to serving on the NJASRO advisory board, Maria also currently is serving as Co-Vice President of Public Policy for the New Jersey Association for the Education of Young Children (NJAEYC).
